  1. Asalamoalekum,
I am a mother of 3 the oldest of which is a five year old girl named Zahra. Both Zahra and her 3 year old brother speak Urdu fluently. I can tell you that it was not easy to accomplish, but it has been most rewarding. For starters, my husband and I speak only Urdu with each other even though he grew up here and mostly spoke English before we got married.
I find that kids are really interested in vocabulary in various languages. Like instead of starting with letters, start with teaching your kids what a cat, dog or elephant is called in Urdu.

  2. Dear Sadaf,

I absolutely agree with you on this particular observation you made. Children certainly learn words quicker than the alphabet because they get to associate the word with a picture of an animal or a thing etc. and this helps them in remembering the names of various animals/objects.

The Urdu at Home team will be soon be introducing flash cards with Urdu alphabet letters, animal names, and vegetable names etc. on their online store - which is still under construction.

Thank you for your contribution. We look forward to hearing more form you.

  3. Dear Savera,
Its so nice to find people who are as passionate about teaching their kids Urdu as I am. And I am delighted to know that flash cards, and other such resources will soon be available online. I have looked everywhere for this stuff in the past. Eventually I had to make my own flash cards and even an Urdu alphabet song, which helped my kids learn it.
Thank you for creating a blog about this topic.
